Gruyères is a lovely medieval village located in the French speaking part of Switzerland between Bern and Lausanne, sitting on top of an 82 m high hill and it is the hometown of Gruyere cheese and H.R. Giger, author of the Alien.

This location is perfect for a day trip from any of the bigger cities in Switzerland. We recommend parking your car at the Gruyere Cheese factory and stroll up to the town and breathe in some fresh Swiss air (it will take you approximately 20 minutes and might require some strength while pushing the buggy) or drive up the Route de la Cite and park your car in the middle of the hill. The old town as such is tiny, even including the castle you will be through it in about 1-2 hours. Streets are paved with cobblestones (like in any other medieval town), so sneakers and a light buggy are definitely handy. Have a drink across the street of the HR Giger museum, though visiting the museum itself with a baby is definitely not recommended.

It is best to arrive to Gruyeres by car, even though the train station is located right at the cheese factory. On the way out, stop in the neighbouring village, Broc and visit the Maison Cailler chocolate factory.
