A UNESCO world heritage site, Venice of the North or College of the European – the magical city of Bruges is known under all those names and its history dates back to the 8th century AD. With most of its medieval architecture intact, Bruges is famous for its lace industry and its several types of beers named after the town. Due to its flat landscape, cycling is very popular, however strolling around the historical centre could be bit bumpy because it is paced cobblestones.
A nice stroll can start at the Grote Markt (main square) with a view of the Belfry of Bruges and then continue to the Church of our Lady with a white marble sculpture of the Madonna and child created by Michelangelo. Returning over the Bonifacius Bridge, following the Dijver channel, you can cross the Huidenvettersplein bridge back to the Burg square with its picturesque city hall.
There are no green parks in the old city centre, but if you are willing to walk a couple of minutes heading south, then from the Huidenvettersplein bridge following Vismarkt and Jozef Suvéestraat, you will get to the Konig Astrid park, with a nicely equipped playground. Visit the Boudewijn Seapark, a water theme park including a dolphinarium, minigolf, waterslides and a playground for the youngest ones.
If you are fan of Collin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson and Ralph Fiennes you should see the In Bruges movie (18+), filmed here, portraying the town during the Christmas season.
Located approximately 70 km northwest of Brussels, the best way to get to Bruges is by car or by direct train from the Brussels airport. Local public transport consists mostly of Bus lines (barrier-free) connecting the city centre and suburbs. If you park your car in the main railway station’s car park, you will get your public transport ticket for free, so don´t forget to validate it when buying your public transport pass.
