Frankfurt, the economic and financial centre of Germany, also called Mainhattan or Bankfurt, lies on the bank of the Main river. Even though heavily bombed during WWII Frankfurt’s downtown has retained the Goethe architecture, with the Römerberg in its heart, neighbouring the brand new modern district full of skyscrapers. The southern end of the Eisener Steg bridge, which is for pedestrians only, offers a nice view of the city landscape. The Palmen Garden, the green oasis of the city centre, displays up to 3000 different types of plants, while being one of the best places for relaxation in the busy city. The same applies for the city Zoo, located nearby.

Further green areas can be found in downtown, close to the church of Santa Pail, or you can enjoy a walk in the park along the right river bank. If you want to admire the city from above, take the elevator to the top of the Europa Tower, the second highest building in Germany. For car lovers, every second years in September, there is the largest car show in Europe, which however is always crowded and thus not suitable for visiting with small kids.

The public transport uses trams, buses, U-Bahns (subway) and regional trains. It is very convenient to get straight to the city centre from Germany’s largest airport, the Frankfurt am Main International Airport, arriving at the main train station.
