Melbourne, second largest city in Australia, is for several years in row ranked as one of the top cities in the world to live in. Stretched around the Yarra river flowing into Port Phillip, Melbourne is often referred to as the Garden City due to its many parks and gardens.
Melburnians are very fond of culture and sports, supported by many all year round events like the Australian Open (tennis), The Melbourne Cup (horse racing), Australian Grand Prix (Formula One) and many others. Relax in one of the city parks, like the Albert Park, Royal Park with a nature and water play playground, the Children’s garden at Royal Botanic Gardens, Murrumbeena park or in Australian Gardens Cranbourne.
During bad weather (which is quite unlikely in Melbourne), entertain your toddlers in the famous Luna Park, the Sealife Melbourne Aquarium, Melbourne Museum’s children’s gallery or the Collingwood Children’s Farm (with farmer’s market on every second Saturday of the month). With older kids, find an adventure in the Clip ‘N’ Climb park with 33 different climbs.
Melbourne’s public transport consists of the world’s largest tram network, with the trams mostly barrier free and buggy friendly. A ride on the free heritage tram (City Circle route) is a perfect way for tourists to get a taste of the city. Same goes for trains and the train stations with most of the metropolitan stations (except Heyington station) are barrier free either by using ramps or lifts. Bus network mostly connects the suburbs with the city centre and you can find out which routes are accessible with a buggy by reading the time table (LF – Low Floor, W – wheelchair).
Flying in, you’ll probably pass through Melbourne international airport at Tullamarine, where at terminals 1, 3 and 4 you can hop on the SkyBus (barrier-free) taking you to the city.
