New York City aka the Big Apple is one of the most popular destinations in the world. Consisting of five boroughs - Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, the Bronx, and Staten Island, Manhattan is the one that typically attracts most visitors. The Manhattan area is heavily urbanized, but it is here you will find the large green area of the Central Park (3.41sq km) and many other smaller parks like the Battery park, the Bryant Park or the Washington Square Park, offering activities for babies or green areas for picnics and a rest.
Traveling with your pram to one of the famous islands - Liberty or Ellis Island, is simple. Although neither one of the islands offers any specific activities for babies, visit the museums and spend a lovely day walking around and observing the Big Apple from a distance. We recommend starting early and boarding the ferry at around 8 AM. After returning, during hot summer’s days, allow your kids to relax in the Battery Park fountain play. They will have great fun (but you will need to bring spare clothes). You can combine the trip with a visit to the One World Observatory, which offers magnificent views of the city and the elevator ride is an experience itself, too.
Another hidden gem of the city which has been gaining popularity in the last years is the "High Line". This former supply railroad which was renovated to be a foot track connecting the 34th Street (ramp access) and the Washington Street (elevator access). There are many entry points with elevators and the entire line is barrier free. It is a great spot for relaxation, not far from the busy streets.
While visiting New York with your baby, it is highly recommended to buy one of the city passes, which provide priority access to the main sights. It is a great way to skip the long lines and also save few dollars. The streets of Manhattan are not the cleanest in the world, but they are all barrier-free and generally, walking with a stroller is easy. The same does not apply to public transport – although the main metro stations have barrier-free access, you have to be careful when planning your day and it is best to check the official MTA website, which has a list of accessible stations, before you leave.
