Shanghai is one of China’s directly-controlled municipalities and it is the most populated city in the world with more than 24 million inhabitants. It is a worldwide financial centre and a transportation hub, housing the world's busiest container port. It is located in the Yangtze River Delta, in the mid region on the East Chinese coast. To the north, south and west the municipality borders the provinces of Jiangsu and Zhejiang, and to the east the East China Sea.
