Tokyo, the capital city of Japan, with its population of over 13.5 million is being counted as one of the most populated metropolitan areas in the world. Historically named Edo, Tokyo lays in the Kantō region on the south-eastern side of the main island Honshu and includes the Izu Islands and Ogasawara Islands. It is often referred to as a city, but is officially known and governed as a "metropolitan prefecture"
Twice in recent history has the metropolis been left in ruins: first in the 1923 Great Kantō earthquake and later after extensive firebombing in World War II. Because of this, Tokyo's urban landscape consists mainly of modern and contemporary architecture, and older buildings are scarce. Nonetheless, you can still visit parts where the city’s history breaths at you, simultaneously providing fun for children.
Visit the Asakusa quarter, a shopping and dining street with traditional scenes painted on the walls, or the Hanayashiki amusement park nearby. Climb to the sky at the Tokyo Skytree, an observatory deck or enjoy a water-world while staying dry in the Sumida Aquarium. Don't miss Shibuya, the busiest part of the city with one of the most famous street crossings, but more importantly, with the National Children's Castle, an indoor and outdoor playground area. On the other hand, for relaxation, visit the Tokyo Bay and its Hama-rikyu Gardens, the Tsukiji fish market, the Odaiba Seaside or the Shiokaze parks.
