Wiesbaden, with its approximately 280.000 inhabitants is located in the German state of Hessen, about 40 km away from Frankfurt am Main, and it is one of Europe’s oldest spa towns. In the past Wiesbaden housed 26 hot spring, 14 of these are still flowing to date.
One of the main sights, thus is the Kurhaus (sap house) which these days serves as the city’s convention centre. It is located at the end of Wiesbaden’s main street, Wilhelmstraβe and its entrance faces the Bowling Greens grass-covered square with two fountains. One of Wiesbaden’s most scenic parks, the Kurpark, lies right behind the Kurhaus during summer it is an ideal spot relaxation and a pick nick with your little ones.
If you wish to visit an actual spa for some water fun, try the Kaiser-Friedrich-Therme or the Thermalbad Aukammtal. During the warmer season visit the Opelbad open-air-pools on Wiesbaden’s Neroberg hill, offering an amazing view of the city.
Further sights include the Schlossplatz (Palace Square) with the ducal palace, which nowadays serves as the Landtag (parliamentary building) of the state of Hessen; the New Market Hall; the Marktkirche (Market Church) built in a neo-gothic style with it’s western steeple being 92 metres high; Hessen’s State Theatre; the St. Bonifatius; the Russian Orthodox Church of St. Elizabeth built on the slopes of the Neroberg hill; the Biebrich Palace; the Old Town; the Kochbrunnen; and the Warmer Damm Park.
A visit up the Neroberg hill, with its fantastic view of the city, is a must if you find yourself in Wiesbaden. You can either hike or drive up, or take the Neroberg funicular. At the top of the hill there is a Klatterwald (climbing park) for older children and you can enjoy a hike on the Walderlebnispfad Neroberg forest path.
Further activities for your little ones include a visit in the Tier und Pflanzenpark Fasanerie (animal and plant park), the Schloβ Freudenberg, the Freizeitpark Alter Friedhof or the animal park Mainz-Kastel.
Wiesbaden is slightly hilly and the streets in the heart of the city centre are cobblestoned which can make strolls with a buggy a bit bumpy and tiring. The public transport is run by busses which are barrier-free, however during rush hours the busses can be very crowded, and it might be somewhat challenging to find space when entering with a buggy.
If you arrive at the Frankfurt am Main airport by plane the best way to get to Wiesbaden is with the direct S-Bahn train or with the Airliner bus.
