Zurich, the largest city in Switzerland, overlooking the lake right at the foot of the Alps, is one of the top places in Switzerland to spend some quality time with your family. You will be able to relax even when touring through the city, not only because all main sights are nearby and getting around is smooth, but also because the public transport works like a Swiss watch, people are friendly, and you can literally buy any form of chocolate at almost every corner.
Overlook the city from the Lindenhof park, where your toddlers can run around and play at the playground; walk at the lake promenade, where you can picnic; enjoy a swim in the lake during hot summer months; or take the lake boat trip. At the main train station (HB - Hauptbahnhof), hop onto the S-Bahn S10 to go the Uetliberg hill or take the bus from Bellevue Platz to the Zurichhorn Park with nice playground full of swings, slides and water play areas. The Toy museum can be a good option for a rainy day, which is a likely occurrence outside of the summer time.
Baby City Guide Tip: All Christmas markets in Switzerland are magnificent. The indoor one, located in the main hall of the HB is a little bit crowded, but it is where you can admire the most expensive X-mas tree in the world. When you will get tired of the hordes, walk through the Bahnhofstrasse to the Werdmühleplatz, where you will hear carols sung by a "live" X-mas tree.
The train (S-Bahn) from the airport will need max. 15 minutes to take you to the HB and from there almost everything is within walking distance. The Zurich airport offers a great family services lounge. Great service always comes with a price though, so have your wallet ready and you will enjoy an unforgettable experience.
There is no underground as you might know it in Zurich. The local trains are called S-Bahn and go both above and under the ground.
The trains as such are barrier-free, but in case you want to go to an upper deck, you might climb a few steps. Most platforms have lifts or escalators, however few remain where you need to carry the buggy.
Both old and new types of trams are to be used to travel around the city. All new models have an area for Buggys and are easily accessible. The old trams, on the other hand, have two high steps and if entering with a buggy, it's best to travel at the back of the cart. The good thing is, that all lines have both old and new models, so usually you do not have to wait long to hop on. Tickets can be bought at almost every stop. All buses in the city are barrier-free with a designated space for a buggy.
