Buda castle, currently home of the National Gallery (buildings A, B, C and D), History Museum (Southern wing, building E) and National Library (building F), is a dominant and must see while visiting Budapest. Regardless of how much time you have in this wonderful city, you should take a stroll along the Danube river and hike up to the royal palace complex, that was for centuries a home of Hungarian kings.
If you have a stroller, we recommend to cross the Szecheniy bridge and then at the Clark Adam square turn left right in front of the tunnel to the Siklou alley that will lead you to a lift taking you to the Virgin Mary statue. With 2 year old on your shoulder and infant in the buggy, the hike takes between 5-10 minutes, so wear comfy shoes. Or you can take the underground castle hill funicular, for which you can wait really long queue to take you up to the hill. Once exiting the elevator, start the Buda castle tour from its south wing, at the Budapest History Museum. Don’t worry, there are no other stairs between the history museum and the Matthias temple and if you want to just admire the castle complex from outside and breathe in the history, the tour between those two sights will take you around 30 minutes. Getting down from Matthias’ temple is possible either by foot – climb down the stairs to Hunyadi Janos street and then walk all the way down to the bridge and back to Pest, or take bus nr. 16, that will take you to the Pest side as well (get on at Szentharomsag square, right next to the temple).
The city web sites also recommends two walks – Gentle hill walk or the Steep hill walk. Our recommendation starts at the Steep hill walk, takes bit longer but you don’t have to carry the buggy.
The district area is open daily (24/7) though most of the attractions (museum, gallery, etc.) close either at 6pm or 8pm. For more information about the Buda castle and surrounding area, visit their website: http://budacastlebudapest.com/getting-there/
