Pest is the largest city part of Budapest city, which you can see clearly from the Buda castle. Both Buda and Pest have a long history and were separate city parts until 1873, when they were united and became Budapest. Separated by the Danube river, many beautiful bridges connect Buda with Pest, with most famous Szecenyi chain bridge being the most frequent one (in terms of tourist visits). Compared to hilly part of Buda, Pest is mostly flat and therefore quite convenient for city strolls.
Visit the Parliament building complex, the most famous dominant of Budapest. If you have couple minutes to spare, walk down to the river bank and cross the Antall Jozef street to visit the Shoes on the Danube bank monument.
St. Stephan’s basilica, Vatci utca (street), Szimpla street market or Dohany street synagogue (second largest in the world) are few of many important and interesting places you should see while enjoying the vibe of Pest city and Andrassy boulevard, listed as UNESCO heritage site, is definitely one of them.
In the past few years many of the Pest’s city parks have built in playgrounds for children, namely Szabadsag ter park, Erzsebet ter park, Klauzal ter park, Nepliget park, Vidam park, which is very popular with kids also for its zoo, Varosliget, a city park with Vajdahunyad castle in the middle (check local calendar if there is a local market during your time of visit).
Getting around Pest city is fairly easy and you will mostly walk around. If you need to use public transport, be aware that the trams are mostly not barrier-free and since the metro network is second oldest in Europe (after London), you might need to use some muscles while carrying the buggy around. Also be aware, that the central part of Pest city can be very noisy, especially during night time, so you might need to check your accommodation location and read other visitor’s reviews.
