What would be a trip to New York without visiting the world famous Statue of Liberty. Located south from Manhattan and east of Liberty State Park in Jersey City, the island was previously known as Great Oyster Island and then Bedloe’s Island.
Statue of Liberty is partly barrier-free and buggy accessible only to the top of the pedestal, so if you wish to visit the crown, then you need to carry your baby and leave the stroller at the entrance (no lockers available).
Though the Statue of Liberty is surrounded by green lawn with trees and benches everywhere, don´t estimate it to be an ideal picnic place due to bird´s poo. And keeping your toddler from getting dirty will become adrenaline experience. Refreshments and baby changing room are available at Statue of Liberty Crown Café.
Get there by ferry either from Battery Park (see the Battery Park review) or from New Jersey (second stop after Ellis Island) and make sure that you arrive to the port with some spare time for the security check. Ferries are perfectly accessible with stroller, though there are no changing desks in the restroom.
Statue Cruises is the only official ticket provider operating ferries to both islands (Liberty and Ellis) though there are many companies offering tickets. Some of them include guided tour, some of them only ferry and entrance tickets but at the end, please avoid buying tickets from street vendors. Ferry fees are 18.5$ for an adult, children under 4 are for free. The island is opened every day except 25th December, during winter time from 9:30am, during summer from 8:30am.
