Table Mountain with its flat top is undoubtedly Cape Towns most iconic sight. It is approximately 1.000-meter-high, and it looms over the city’s downtown. At the top of the mountain, on a sunny day, you will have a magnificent view into all directions. You can observe the beautiful coastline towards the north, south and west or the distant mountains in the east. On a clear day you will even be able to see Robben Island, which is where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years.
It is possible to either hike up the top or take the cable cart. If you are however, travelling with babies or young children it will not be possible to hike up because the very steep and rocky trail is not at all suited for strollers. If you are travelling with somewhat older children, it can be a very pleasant and exiting experience. A hike up the mountain with children will take you at least 3 hours and a basic fitness level is required.
If you want to go to the top with your stroller take the cable cart from the base of the mountain. The ride will only be about 5 minutes, but on a clear day the view will be stunning. The cabin is always very full with people, so you won’t have a chance to walk around, but it rotates, which means your will be able to admire the view into all directions.
The pavement on the top is even and you can get around with a stroller. A highlight for children will be the football sized cute rodents you can occasionally see on some of the rocks and you can admire a variety of exotic plants.
After you are tired of walking around you can relax at the café / restaurant (which has restrooms equipped with a baby changing table) or have a picnic outside. Keep in mind that the weather in Cape Town can change very quickly. Even if the sky is clear in the morning it is a good idea to take some warm wind repellent clothing with you, because even in summer it can be quite cold at the top of the mountain.
A return ticket for the Table Mountain cable cart costs between R275-R290 for adults and R135-R140 depending on the time of the day and the season. Children under the age of 4 travel for free. The operating hours vary depending on the time of the year and the length of the days, but all year-round cable cart operates at least between the hours 8:30-18:00. During local summer the operating hours are from 8:00-21:30.
